Asante Kotoko formed in 1935 have been in the Grand-Finals of CAF
Inter-Club Competitions on NINE (9) occasions but they are been able to
win just two (2) of them. That was 1970-71 and 1983 edition. They failed
to win the Champions League in 1967, 1971, 1973, 1982, 1993. Also,
failed to win the Cup Winners Cup in 2002 as well as the Caf
Confederations Cup in 2004-05 edition.
Kotoko
overall have reached the TEN Grand-Finals when adding the 1985 WAFU Club
Championship but failed to win the trophy. Africa Sport of Ivory Coast
won it on penalties in Kumasi after 2-2 on aggregate.

Entente Sportive de Sétif which was formerly known as Entente
Plasticiens Sétif formed in 1958 in Algeria is been boosted by THREE (3)
Continental trophies. Two CAF Champions League and a Super Cup trophy.
Their
first Champions League trophy was in 1988 when they defeated Ghanaian
Edward Ansah and John Benson's Iwuanyanwu Nationale of Ibadan, Nigeria
in the Final.
Goalkeeper Eddy Ansah played the two legs but John Benson aka Kutiri played only the 2nd Leg for Iwuanyanwu Nationale.
Their Second Champions League trophy was in 2014 against TP Mazembe and won the Super Cup in 2015.

ES Setif have won the Afro Asian Championship ONCE in 1989. They have
won One North African Cup of Champions and two Arab Champions League,
One North African Cup Winners Cup, and one North Africa Super Cup making
it NINE (9) International trophies.

THE FIRST GHANAIAN CLUB TO PLAY AGAINST A NORTH AFRICAN CLUB was
Kumasi Asante Kotoko against Ismaily from Egypt. They beat Kotoko 3-2 on
30th November, 1969 after a 2-2 drawn game in a first leg in Kumasi. It
was a semi-final of the 1969 Champions League.
• The first Ghanaian club to play on Algerian side was Sekondi Eleven Wise against MA Hussein Dey.
They lost 4-1 in Algeria after a 1-1 draw in Accra in a Quarter-finals of the 1980 Cup Winners Cup.

Sekondi Eleven Wise, Hearts Of Oak, Asante Kotoko, Ghapoha, Ashanti
Gold SC, Medeama SC, Bechem United, and Aduana Stars are the Ghanaian
Clubs to have faced Algerian counterparts in an Africa Inter-Club
Competitions.

CLUBS on the other hand are, MA Hussein Dey, USK Algiers, JS Kabylie,
USM El Harrach, USM Ain Beida, USM Alger, JSM Bejaia, MC El Eulma, MO
Bejaia, MC Alger and ES Setif to have engaged Ghanaian opponents in an
Africa Inter-Inter Club Competitions.

The first time Asante Kotoko played an Algerian opposition was 1990
when they met Jeunesse Sportive Kabylie (JSK) during the Semi-finals
Stage of the Champions League.
Kotoko won the first
leg by a lone goal in Ghana. The goal was scored by Sarfo Gyamfi but
lost the second leg by 2-0. Their two goals came from Ait Tahar and
Hakim Medane. JSK eventually won the trophy after defeating Nkana Red
Devis of Zambia on penalties. Their head coach was Stefan Zywotko and
Ali Fergani was a Technical Director.

Asante Kotoko have failed to progress or win a trophy in which they
kick a ball in the Accra Sports stadium on one of both legs in CAF
Inter-Club Competitions since 1988.
The last time
Asante Kotoko survived after playing in Accra Sports Stadium was in 1971
when they drew 1-1 with Great Olympics and won 1-0 in Kumasi during the
Semi-finals of 1971 Champions League. They lost the Grand-Finals to
Canon Yaounde of Cameroon.

Asante Kotoko was banned from playing in Kumasi by CAF in 1987 after
they were eliminated by Al Ahly after fans attacked on Referee. A game
Asante Kotoko needed two or more goals after losing 1st leg 2-0 in
Cairo. They won the game in Kumasi by 1-0. Sarfo Gyamfi scored the only
goal.
They were moved to Accra Sports stadium to play their home game encounter against FC 105 of Gabon in 1988.

Essipong Sports Stadium against IZ Khemisset from Morocco and went back
to Accra the following year (2010).

Can Kotoko break the jinx to progress?

ES Setif Coach, Nabil Kouki who is from Tunisia was in-charge of the Al
Hilal team that beat Asante Kotoko 1-0 in Sudan and drew 1-1 at the
Kumasi Baba Yara Sports Stadium. A day Songne Yacouba save Asante Kotoko
from a defeat. He had the equalizer 4 minutes to full time. That was
the 2018-19 CAF Confederation Cup Group Stage.

He was also under observation when Al Ittihad Tripoli invited Asante
Kotoko to two friendly games in Libya in 2016. Asante Kotoko divided the
team into two leaving the other one to Coach Michael Osei to compete
for the Ghalca G6 tournament held in Essipong Sports Stadium.
Coach
David Duncan took the team to Libya. They lost the first game 2-1. Obed
Owusu had the consolation for Kotoko and drew goalless two days after.
The coach signed a permanent deal a week after the training match.

Nabil Kouki guided CS Sfaxien to the CAF Confederation Cup Finals in
2010. He lost the trophy to Faith Union Sports (FUS) of Rabat. They drew
0-0 in the first leg away and lost 3-2 at home.
