THE 63RD EDITION OF GHANA LEAGUE COMMENCES: PREVIEW OF ACCRA HEARTS OF OAK HOST HOHOE UNITED

The Ghana Premier League commences over the weekend across the length and breadth of the country with interesting fixtures. 

Accra Hearts of Oak will host Hohoe United in a week one fixture at the Accra Sports Stadium in a Friday night game. 

The Phobians are highly motivated for their first game in the league after winning two trophies during the offseason and promising to play good football to entertain their fans. 

A good start for Hohoe United against Hearts of Oak in week one would be a great boost and help them settle into the league after gaining promotion to Ghana's top-flight league. 

Hearts of Oak's gaffer, Didi Dramani, had a successful offseason, with his team managing to score in each game played under his supervision, recording four wins, one draw, one loss, 9 goals scored, and 3 goals conceded in six games played. 

Both teams have signed new players to bolster their strengths in each department after the previous season.

Hohoe United comes into the league not as debutants but rather seasoned players, given their history as Liberty Professionals in Zone Three of the Ghana Division One League. 

Hearts of Oak hopes to overturn their fortunes after placing fourth with 58 points in the 2024-25 season. 

Hohoe United was crowned the champion of Zone Three with 72 points accumulated in the Ghana Division One League.

Predictions: Home win/draw 

• Hohoe United, formerly known as Liberty Professionals, underwent a name change in June 2023. The change occurred after the sale of their Division One slot to new owners, led by Hon. John Peter Amewu, the then Member of Parliament for Hohoe. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) approved the name change after receiving the necessary documents from the new ownership group.

Here's a breakdown of the events:

February 2023: Liberty Professionals was relegated from the Ghana Premier League. 

In June 2023, Liberty Professionals divested its slot in the Division One League to new owners, who then changed the club's name to Hohoe United. The Ghana Football Association (GFA) formally approved the name change. 

In June 2025, Hohoe United was crowned champions of the Division One League Zone 3 and secured promotion to the Ghana Premier League.

• The 2025-26 season of the Ghana League, which is the 63rd edition since the competition started in 1956 and the 29th edition since the inception of the Ghana Premier League on December 18, 1993, in the 1993-94 season, marks the 63rd appearance for Hearts of Oak and the 20th appearance for Hohoe United (formerly Liberty Professionals).

• The 2025-26 season will be the 12th time that the Ghana League will be played with 18 clubs.

• The inaugural 18-club league was the 1962-63 season, which Accra Real Republicans won, followed by the 1963-64 season, which was won by Asante Kotoko.

• Moreover, Asante Kotoko won the 1975 season title with 18 clubs competing, and Hearts of Oak repeated that feat in the 1978 season.

• Furthermore, Hearts of Oak won the 1979 season with 18 clubs, while Asante Kotoko won in 1980. Similarly, Hearts of Oak won the 2020-21 season with 18 clubs, and Asante Kotoko took the title in the 2021-22 season.

• The 2022-23 season was won by Medeama SC with 60 points, while FC Samartex 1996 took the title in the 2023-24 season, a league featuring 18 clubs, with 61 points.

• The 2023-24 season was the last time a Ghanaian top-flight competition featured 18 clubs competing. In that season, FC Samartex emerged as the champions and will hope to replicate that feat this season.

• Since the inception of the Ghana Premier League, 106 new clubs have featured, and only 14 clubs have won the title so far, with Kumasi Asante Kotoko being the most successful club with 24 titles, followed by Accra Hearts of Oak (21 titles); others include Obuasi Ashanti Gold (4 titles), Accra Great Olympics (2 titles), Dormaa Aduana FC (2 titles), and seven other clubs with one title each: Sekondi Eleven Wise (1), Real Republicans (1), Cape Coast Ebusua Dwarfs (1), Sekondi Hasaacas (1), Berekum Chelsea (1), Legon Cities [Wa All-Stars] (1), Tarkwa Medeama SC (1), Samreboi FC Samartex 1996 (1), and Bibiani Gold Stars (1).

• The defending champions, Bibiani Gold Stars FC, are the fifth club from the Western Region to have won Ghana's top-flight league title since its inception in 1956:

• Techiman Eleven Wonders, Swedru All Blacks, and Hohoe United (formerly Liberty Professionals), champions of Zones 1, 2, and 3 respectively, will participate in the 2025-26 Ghana Premier League campaign.

• Techiman Eleven Wonders is the third team from Techiman to participate in the Ghana Premier League, following Techiman Holy Stars (1985-86) and Techiman City (2015-16), with Techiman Eleven Wonders joining in 2020-21.

Apart from Techiman Eleven Wonders, which played in the league for more than one season, the other two teams were relegated in the same season they joined the league.

• Swedru All Blacks' first appearance in the Ghana Premier League was in the 1961-62 season, and they placed 9th at the end of the season. They were relegated for the first time at the end of their second season (1962-63). Swedru All Blacks was the first club from Swedru to participate in the Ghana Premier League. Swedru Fankobaah FC became the second team, joining in the 1963-64 season.
