Kumasi Asante Kotoko becomes the third Ghanaian club to win a match against a Nigerian club on Nigerian soil after twenty-five years.
Sekondi Hasaacas was the first Ghanaian club to win against a Nigerian side on Nigerian soil in the 1982 WAFU Cup, where Hasaacas won 1-0 over Spartans of Owerri FC on October 16, 1982.
Eighteen years later, Hearts of Oak became the second club to record a win against a Nigerian team on their own soil, with a 2-0 victory over Lobi Stars courtesy of goals from Emmanuel Osei Kuffour and Ishmael Addo at the Aper Aku Stadium in Makurdi, Nigeria, during the 2000 CAF Champions League group stage on August 19, 2000.
The win also ends Ghanaian clubs' 25-year winless record against Nigerian teams on Nigerian soil.
After a 55-year wait, Kumasi Asante Kotoko has added to football history by becoming the third Ghanaian team to win against a Nigerian side on their own soil. Kotoko secured a 1-0 win over Kwara United in the CAF Confederation Cup at the M.K.O. Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta, Nigeria, with a strike from Hubert Gyau scoring the decisive goal in the 54th minute.
